29/06/2022 – We attended an event held at the University of Birmingham which focused on the topic of criminalisation of poverty. This opened great discussions of whether it is a crime to be poor. Important things brought to light were how not paying your tv license and council tax (with valid reasons, and strong effort from the individual to try to pay it) are not criminal acts but civil matters and should not be sent to prison.
